Photo of the day, a rendering of Cape Henry Lighthouse.
The Lighthouse was mentioned in a recent Virginian-Pilot article:
“Today, erosion has swept away most of the sand from around the foundation. State and city preservation officials worry the lighthouse will eventually be in danger if the foundation is left unprotected.
Last week, the city completed paperwork to embark on a $440,000 project to guard the foundation and fix loose mortar. Most of the money is federal transportation funding allocated by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The nonprofit organization that owns the lighthouse, Preservation Virginia, is raising $89,000 to help pay for the work.
The main idea is to bring in sand to create a dune that once again will protect the foundation. A retaining wall will hold the sand in place, and a new entrance ramp will replace the concrete steps. The work is scheduled to start early next year.”
